VIOLIN 1976 : Eleventh Prize
Gonçal Comellas Fabregas was born in Avinyonet de Puigventós (Gerona) in 1945. By the age of thirteen he won his first competition and one year later he debuted in Barcelona under the direction of Juan Massiá. When he was seventeen he graduated from the Conservatorio Superior Municipal de Música de Barcelona with the highest distinction. In 1962 he won the Isidro Gyenes Competition in Madrid. A while later he interpreted the Brahms concerto in the Palau de la Música de Barcelona, which marked the beginning of an extraordinary career, with performances troughout Europe, the United States and Israel.
Gonçal Comellas has presented himself with orchestras such as the Royal Philharmonic, New Philharmonia, Scottish Symphony, Orchestre National de France, National Orchestra of Belgium, the symphonic orchestras of Hamburg, Israel and Warsaw, Menuhin Festival Orchestra, Orchestra of Bratislava, Israel Chamber Orquestra, Orquesta Nacional de España, Orquesta Ciudad de Barcelona, and most of the other Spanish orchestras.
In 1972 he won the Carl Flesch Competition in London. Yehudi Menuhin, President of the jury, invited him to perform at the Festival of the City of London, the beginning of a year-long collaboration for performances of Bach's double concerto in Barcelona, London, the Gstaad Festival, etc. Gonçal Comellas has also distinguished himself at other competitions, such as Jacques Thibaud (Paris), Queen Elisabeth Competition and Viña del Mar (Chile).
In recent years he dedicates himself to the direction of several orchestras : he is the founder and director of the Orquesta de Cámara Catalana, the Orquesta Reina Sofía and the orchestra of the Palau de la Música Barcelona. He has also directed the Orquesta Sinfónica de Córdoba, Orquesta Sinfónica de Baleares, Orquesta de Valencia, Joven Orquesta Nacional de España and Orquesta de Castellón. He is the Music Director of the Comellas Chamber Orchestra.
