Romanian soprano Teodora Gheorghiu began her musical studies first of all as a flute player. However, she felt impelled to devote herself entirely to singing and pursued her studies with Niculina Mirea and Gheorghe Rosu at the Gheorghe Dima Academy of Music in Cluj, Romania, where she also took part in numerous master classes. After winning several prizes for vocal interpretation during her time in Romania, she very quickly became a prize-winner of several international singing competitions, notably the Julian Gayarre Competition in Pamplone in 2002 and the George Enescu Competition in Bucharest in 2003.
Forever aspiring to perfect her art, she took enhanced studies with Susanna Eken and José van Dam at the Queen Elisabeth Chapelle Musicale in Belgium and in 2003 made her debut with the Romanian National Opera in Bucharest singing the Queen of the Night in Die Zauberflöte. She was subsequently invited to appear at the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels, the Lucerne Opera, the Opéra National de Lorraine in Nancy, the Grand Théâtre in Geneva, the Lausanne Opera, and the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées in Paris Paris, where she particularly made a strong impression in the roles of Rosina (Il barbiere di Siviglia), Musetta (La Bohème), and the title part in Zaide.
After receiving a grant for further advanced studies at the Herbert von Karajan Centre, Teodora Gheorghiu made her debut at the Vienna State Opera in 2004. Between 2005 et 2007, she was a company member of the Lucerne Opera and then, between 2007 and 2010, she was engaged as a permanent member of the Vienna State Opera. In Vienna she was particularly commended for her performances of Adele (Die Fledermaus), The Queen of the Night (Die Zauberflöte), Nannetta (Falstaff), Fiakermilli (Arabella), Adina (L’Elisir d’Amore), Elvira (L’Italiana in Algeri), Sophie (Werther) et Eudoxie (La Juive). In 2009 she sang the role of the Italian Singer (Capriccio) at the Richard Strauss Festival in Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
Teodora Gheorghiu has performed with some of the world’s most renowned conductors, including Seiji Ozawa, Franz Welser-Möst, Marco Armiliato, Bertrand de Billy, Peter Schneider, Adam Fischer and Christophe Rousset.
Outside the opera house, Teodora Gheorghiu's career has equally flourished in recital and concert appearances. Some of her most noted collaborations have been with Paul Goodwin conducting the Academy of Ancient Music in London, Sigiswald Kujiken conducting La petite Bande, Marc Soustrot conducting the Orchestre Symphonique de la Monnaie in Brussels, Asher Fisch conducting the Orchestre National de Belgique in Brussels, and John Axelrod conducting the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra.
Among her recent activity figures a new CD recording with Christophe Rousset and Les Talens Lyriques (release in 2011). During the summer of 2011 she has given a series of concerts including a recital at the Festival International d’Opéra Baroque in Beaune.
