Which works do the candidates prepare and perform for the Cello Competition?

Video-preselection

  • one of the six Etudes for cello and piano, opus Postumus, by François Servais ;
  • the Sonata in A minor, D. 821, ‘Arpeggione’, by Franz Schubert;
  • a work of the candidate’s choice for solo cello.
These works are screened by the jury members of the preselection, in order to select the candidates who can participate in the first public round.

First round

In the first round recital, each cellist performs a sonata by Luigi Boccherini, with cello accompaniment, and the first movement of the Sonata for solo cello by Eugène Ysaÿe. In addition, the candidate chooses one of the following works :
  • Phantasiëstuck by Paul Hindemith ;
  • Nocturne by André Jolivet ;
  • the first two movements of Pohádka by Leoš Janáček.
Just before the first round, the candidates’ repertoire will be published in the First round calendar, together with the performance schedule.

Semi-final

  • Concerto in C major, Hob. VIIb:1 or Concerto in D major, Hob. VIIb:2 by Joseph Haydn. The 24 semi-finalists will perform with the Orchestre Royal de Chambre de Wallonie, conducted by Vahan Mardirossian.
  • The jury chooses one of two recital programmes proposed by the candidate, each including works of the candidate’s choice and the compulsory unpublished work written especially for this year’s competition by Daan Janssens.
You can discover the jury's choice of recital in the Semi-final calendar, the day before the candidate's performance. Each semi-finalist plays his concerto and recital on two different days.

Final

  • An unpublished work written specially for this year’s competition.
  • A concerto of choice.
After the semi-final, the concertos chosen by the finalists will be indicated in the Calendar of the final. The six finalists perform with the Brussels Philharmonic, conducted by Stéphane Denève.
