Kazumasa Matsumoto

Born in Kurashiki, Okayama (Japan) in 1979, Kazumasa Matsumoto started with piano lessons at the age of six with Atsuko Taniguchi. After winning first prizes at many local piano competitions during his childhood, he attained the summit of the 48th National Students Music Competition at the age of fifteen. Studying as a freshman at the Tokyo University of Arts, he won the Japan Classical Music Competition in 1998. Embarking on an international career giving recitals and concerts at home and abroad, he moved to Berlin to receive further training by Pascal Devoyon.

Kazumasa Matsumoto is a laureate of several international competitions. He won Third Prize at the International Young Pianist Competition in Memory of Horowitz (Ukraine, 1998), and consequently participated in the prizewinner concert tour in five major cities in the United States, including a performance at Carnegie Hall in New York. In 2001 he won Fourth Prize at the International Busoni Competition in Bolzano.

Co-starring with many famous musicians, Kazumasa Matsumoto has worked with major orchestras such as Praha Philharmonic Orchestra, National Orchestra of Belgium, Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra, Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, Japan Philharmonic Orchestra, New Japan Philharmonic Orchestra and Osaka Philharmonic Orchestra. He took part in concerts in the Czech Republic, Germany and China.

Kazumasa Matsumoto has released eleven highly acclaimed CD recordings. In recent years, he is also crossing borders between genres. He has collaborated with musicians who play Japanese traditional instruments and has performed with a jazz pianist. Currently, he is teaching at Tokyo University of Arts and Kurashiki-Sakuyo College of Music.
