CELLO 2017 : Third Prize
Santiago Cañón-Valencia trained under Henryk Zarzycki in Colombia, James Tennant in New Zealand, and Andrés Díaz in the United States. He is currently pursuing a master’s at the Hochschule für Musik Franz Liszt in Weimar, under Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt. He has won prizes in a number of competitions, including the Beijing International Competition, the Johansen International Competition, the Cassado Competition, the Pablo Casals Competition, and, more recently, the Prieto Competition in Mexico. Santiago Cañón-Valencia has performed with Yuri Bashmet and has shared the stage with Maxim Vengerov, Li-Wei Qin, and Philippe Muller. As a soloist, he has played with the Moscow Soloists and the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, among many other orchestras. He has recorded several discs for the New Zealand-based Atoll label and has appeared as a guest artist at the Cartagena International Music Festival and the Verbier Festival Academy.
