Making classical music more accessible with TwoSet Violin
20/10/2024
The Australian duo TwoSet Violin, well-known for their humorous and educational content about classical music, honoured us with their presence for the final of the 2024 Violin Competition. Through their viral videos and worldwide classical-comedy performances, professional musicians Brett and Eddy aimed to make classical music more relevant to a new audience. Their visit to the Competition was one of their final feats before they bid farewell to their project in October 2024.
Since the creation of their YouTube channel in 2013, they have garnered over 9.500.000 followers across social media and over one billion views. At first, their content was mostly shared by fellow classical musicians who understood the niche humour in their videos, depicting the joys and frustrations of playing an instrument. But in the past few years they have reached a broader audience, inspiring a wide range of people to go to classical music concerts for the first time.
Their work has led to collaborations in videos or on stage with world-class soloists such as Lang Lang, Hilary Hahn, Janine Jansen, James Ehnes and Maxim Vengerov. And then it was the Queen Elisabeth Competition’s turn!
Invited by the RTBF, they came to Brussels to be part of the broadcast of the final, but they were on a secret mission: to try to get as much advice as possible from the finalists and to perform in front of the jury to get their approval. Since its publication last July, their video ‘We Were Invited To The Most Prestigious Violin Competition In The World’ gathered more than 400.000 views on YouTube.
Throughout the final week, the Belgian audience gave the duo a warm welcome, with fans streaming into Bozar to try to catch a glimpse of them or to meet them. During their stay in Brussels, Brett and Eddy introduced the Competition to a demographic that might not have been previously engaged with it or considered it too formal or exclusive. Their humorous and relatable approach to classical music, while still upholding the integrity of the genre, has made the Competition seem less intimidating and more engaging, encouraging more people to follow it.
We are hoping to welcome many of them for the next Competition, which will be dedicated to the piano, from 5 May to 11 June 2025.
