68 candidates will participate in the 2022 Cello Competition

We are proud to announce the 68 talented young cellists selected for the first round of the 2022 Queen Elisabeth Cello Competition, which will take place from 9 until 14 May at Flagey in Brussels.

68 candidates
There are 20 women and 48 men, representing 26 different nationalities. Discover their names in the pdf-document below or find out more about each of them on their candidate page.

For this second cello edition, 152 applicants between 18 and 31 years old have taken their chance to apply. Each of them had recorded three works for the video preselection round :
  • one of the 6 Etudes for cello and piano, opus Postumus, by Belgian composer François Servais;
  • the Sonata in A minor, D. 821, ‘Arpeggione’, by Franz Schubert;
  • a work of the candidate’s choice for solo cello.

Preselection jury
The 68 participants were selected by means of a video preselection round behind closed doors, by a panel of jury members presided by Gilles Ledure and consisting of Natalie Clein, Roel Dieltiens, Marie Hallynck, Frans Helmerson, Anssi Karttunen and Jian Wang. The names of the jury members of the public rounds will be announced mid-March.

The order in which the candidates will appear in the first public round will be announced after the drawing of lots, on Friday night 6 May. Don't miss out on the opportunity to hear some of the world's most prodigious young cellists at work at Flagey or the Brussels Centre for Fine Arts and book your ticket now !
