Everything you need to know about the first round

The first round of this year's exceptional Piano Competition is about to start at Studio 4 of Flagey! The order of appearance of the candidates from Monday 3 to Saturday 8 May has been determined by drawing of lots. Download the schedule on the bottom of the page or follow the link below to the calendar of the first round.

Live video streaming
There will be no audience in the concert hall this year, but thanks to RTBF, VRT and our partner Proximus, you can now also follow the first round via live streaming on our website, or on demand. Rendez-vous as from Monday 3 May at 4pm at this link.

Noon sessions
In order to respect the applicable sanitary measures, we have added an extra session at 12 noon on Tuesday and Wednesday. At each session, four candidates will perform a solo recital.

58 candidates
As some of the 74 candidates have withdrawn, there are 58 pianists who will participate in the first round. Among them, 9 women and 49 men, representing 16 different nationalities. Find out more about them on their personal pages.

In the first round recital, each pianist performs a work of choice and the first movement of a classical sonata by Beethoven, Haydn or Mozart. In addition, the candidate plays one or two of the four études he has prepared for this round : one by Chopin; one by Liszt; one by Bartók, Debussy, Prokofiev, Rachmaninov, Skryabin or Stravinsky ; and one by Abrahamsen, Dusapin, Ligeti, Mantovani, Messiaen, Ohana or Rautavaara. Their programmes have been added to their personal pages on this website and the first round calendar. Each candidate communicates his choice just before his performance. We will adjust the programme afterwards on our website.

The jury members will be present in the concert hall, not at the traditional red jury table, but spread at a safe distance from each other.

Proclamation of the semi-finalists
Due to the technical preparations for the semi-final, the first round proclamation will not be live streamed. The names of the 12 semi-finalists will be announced on our website around midnight on Saturday 8 May. In order to respect the current sanitary measures, we have limited the number of semi-finalists to 12 instead of 24.

The performances of the candidates will be available as podcasts on the website of Musiq3.
