Focus on the laureates of Piano 2021: Keigo Mukawa
14/01/2025
Keigo Mukawa’s artistry bridges classical traditions with innovative programming, captivating audiences across solo, chamber, and orchestral settings in both Japan and Europe. His affinity with the works of Maurice Ravel has resulted in several concert projects and his double CD featuring Ravel’s complete solo piano works winning a Clef d’or ResMusica 2024.
In 2023, he made his debut recital at the Flagey Piano Days and embarked on a successful piano duo tour with Kyohei Sorita, performing 15 concerts in three weeks’ time.
2024 entailed significant milestones, beginning with his debut recital at Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw, a performance that was broadcast on Dutch radio. Highlights of his orchestral engagements included Messiaen’s Turangalîla Symphony with the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra under Chung Myung-whun, and Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 9 Jeunehomme with the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra conducted by Jonathan Nott. With pianist Nathalia Milstein he performed three Stravinsky ballets for two pianos in Japan. Further, his innovative recital at the Festival de l’Intemporel in Tokyo juxtaposed Helmut Lachenmann’s works on a modern piano with Schubert on a fortepiano, in partnership with the French festival Les Volques and the IRCAM.
Winner of the Clef d’or ResMusica 2024 in the piano recital category for his Ravel double CD, a remarkable honour for a non-French pianist, Keigo Mukawa has also earned a Master degree in Fortepiano from the Paris Conservatory in June 2024, reaffirming his commitment to performing on period instruments. Beyond music, he is pursuing wine expertise through the Japan Sommelier Association, with plans to merge his passions in unique wine-and-music pairing concerts.
In 2025, Keigo Mukawa will perform Poulenc’s Concerto for Two Pianos with his mentor Frank Braley and the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra, Ravel’s concertos with the Tokyo City Philharmonic, and Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 3 with the Orchestre Ensemble Kanazawa. He will also make his Taiwan debut performing Grieg’s Piano Concerto. Celebrating Ravel’s 150th anniversary, he will undertake a solo recital tour in Japan, presenting Ravel’s complete piano works in one evening. A chamber music tour in Alsace, France, with cellist Stéphanie Huang, and two new CD recordings in the pipeline - Beethoven, the Revolutionist by Keigo solo and Fantaisies with Huang - add to an already extraordinary year.
Looking ahead, Mukawa is poised to make his debut at Hamburg’s Elbphilharmonie and expand his presence across Europe and Canada.
