Focus on the laureates of Violin 2019 : Stella Chen

Since winning the Queen Elisabeth Competition in 2019, Stella Chen has finished her doctorate in music at the Juilliard School and continued teaching there alongside her longtime mentor Li Lin. In 2020, she was awarded with an Avery Fisher Career Grant and the Lincoln Center Emerging Artist Award. As a chamber musician she was recently invited by Carnegie Hall (photo (c) Rachel Papo) and the Phillips Collection and festivals such as Ravinia, Seattle Chamber Music and Kronberg. Amongst her chamber music partners are Itzhak Perlman, James Ehnes and Matthew Lipman. She is particularly active as a member of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center in New York.
Exciting debuts as a soloist have included the New York Philharmonic (photo (c) Chris Lee), Chicago Symphony, Minnesota Orchestra, and Baltimore Symphony. In September she performed the North American premiere of Jörg Widmann’s Violin Concerto No 2 with the Juilliard Orchestra and the composer conducting. She also premiered a work for violin and orchestra dedicated to her, Solaris by Jonathan Cziner. She will make her debut tour in Japan in January 2024, which had been postponed from 2020 due to the pandemic. In June 2024, she will perform at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw for the first time.
Stella plays the 1700 ex-Petri Stradivarius, on generous loan from Dr. Ryuji Ueno and Rare Violins In Consortium, Artists and Benefactors Collaborative and the 1708 Huggins Stradivarius courtesy of the Nippon Music Foundation (as part of her First Prize at the Queen Elisabeth Competition).

Celebrating the most exceptional recordings of the year, beginning of October, Gramophone has bestowed the Young Artist of the Year Award on Stella’s debut album. She recorded ‘Stella x Schubert’ with pianist Henry Kramer, laureate of the 2016 Piano Competition. Its major piece is Schubert’s challenging Fantasy in C major, which she performed in her semi-final recital during the 2019 Competition and wrote her dissertation about.
