After having performed the commissioned work by heart in the final round of the Competition in 2019, many people still ask Stephen Kim about it even today. An ardent advocate for contemporary music, he has devoted part of his career to performing and recording new works.

In addition to solo performances, I have been very passionate for performing chamber music, ensemble playing, teaching, and premiering new music by living composers. For me, playing contemporary music is a bit like walking in fresh, untouched snow. There is an excitement to jump in and start paving a path for the composition in the repertoire. - Stephen Kim

In 2020 he gave the New York premiere of Steven Mackey’s Violin Concerto Beautiful Passing by heart at Carnegie Hall. The next year, he devoted his first album “Till Dawn” to new music ; 75 minutes of works composed by Shinuh Lee, of which two were written for and dedicated to him. He also premiered new works by nine composers in Seoul and performed his debut recital at the Seoul Arts Center in Korea.

2022 saw him performing chamber music with Jörg Widmann, Tabea Zimmermann, and Christian Tetzlaff in Kronberg, where he is currently studying with Antje Weithaas. Subsequently, he toured Germany with Tabea Zimmermann and made his Wigmore Hall debut. He was also invited at the Marlboro Music Festival and performed all 12 Caprices for Solo Violin by Earl Kim at the Seoul Arts Center.

A year ago, he debuted in recital at the Konzerthaus Berlin. In March, he performed as a soloist/leader the not-often-performed early Mendelssohn D minor Violin Concerto, with Sejong Soloists, in Alice Tully Hall at the Lincoln Center in New York and the Seoul Arts Center. In summer, he returned to Marlboro and last autumn he toured Korea.

He is perfecting his skills with Hyo Kang at Juilliard, for whom he also acts as a teaching assistant. He has been invited as a visiting artist and lecturer at Seoul National University for workshops and forum seminars and taught chamber music to young musicians in Germany.
