Live streaming of the first round

We are proud to announce that, for the first time ever, the performances of the candidates in the first round will be live video streamed on our website, from Monday 3 to Saturday 8 May!

Thanks to the VRT, the RTBF and Proximus, the 2021 Piano Competition will go completely digital.
The public not being allowed to attend the competition rounds in the concert halls, the Belgian public broadcasters and our partner are making an extra effort this year: not only the semi-final and the final will be streamed live, but you will be able to watch and listen to the first round from the very first to the very last note. Our loyal fans, who are often present from the start of the first round in Flagey, will not have to miss a single performance!

For many, this will be a great opportunity to get to know this competition round a little better.
The first round will take place in Studio 4 of Flagey, from Monday 3 to Saturday 8 May, with two sessions per day (one at 4pm and one at 8pm). In order to respect the sanitary measures, we have added an extra noon session on Tuesday and Wednesday. At each session, four candidates will perform.

Recital programme
In the first round recital, each pianist performs a work of choice and the first movement of a classical sonata by Beethoven, Haydn or Mozart. In addition, the candidate plays one or two of the four études he has prepared for this round : one by Chopin, one by Liszt, one by Bartók, Debussy, Prokofiev, Rachmaninov, Skryabin or Stravinsky ; and one by Abrahamsen, Dusapin, Ligeti, Mantovani, Messiaen, Ohana or Rautavaara. Each candidate communicates his choice just before his performance. We will adjust the programme afterwards in the programme of the live streaming.

On Saturday evening, May 8, the names of the 12 candidates who are selected for the semi-final will be announced around 23:00. Due to the technical preparations for the semi-final, the proclamation will not be live streamed. The results will be announced on our social media and website.

For more than ten years, the Queen Elisabeth Competition has been a pioneer in the field of free streaming of its competition rounds, thanks to the RTBF, the VRT and the contribution of Proximus. The loss of ticket sales for the second year in a row is a serious blow to our non-profit organisation. Support the Competition and the young piano talents who will make you experience unforgettable moments of emotion by donating a free contribution while you watch the live streaming.

The livestream can be followed anywhere in the world! Afterwards, you can replay all performances on our website.
