A graduate of the Tokyo University of the Arts, Seiji Okamoto studied under Kimiko Nakazawa, Gerard Poulet, and Kazuki Sawa. He currently lives in Berlin, where he is studying under Antje Weithaas at the Hochschule fur Musik Hanns Eisler. In 2014, he won first prize and the audience prize at the Bach Competition Leipzig, becoming the first Asian winner of the violin category. In 2016, he won sixth prize and the audience prize at the Sendai competition ; later that year, he took second prize at the Wieniawski Competition in Poznań, which was followed by an extensive tour of Europe, including St Petersburg. He frequently performs as a guest soloist with orchestras, in recital, and in chamber music in Japan, Europe, and the United States and has appeared at various festivals, including the Bachfest in Leipzig and La Folle Journee in Japan.
