Unedited imposed works for the 2025 Piano Competition

20/03/2025

For each instrumental session, the Queen Elisabeth Competition calls on two composers to create the unpublished compulsory works. This year, Ana Sokolović has written the semi-final work for piano solo, and Kris Defoort the work for piano and orchestra to be performed in the final.

The candidates receive the semi-final work upon the acceptance of their application. As for the finalists, they only receive the score one week before the date of their performance at the Brussels Centre for Fine Arts. During that week, they are secluded in the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel, to prepare for the final.

Demi-finale : Ana Sokolović
Her work Two Studies for Piano will be performed by the 24 semi-finalists during their recital, from 12 to 17 May at Studio 4 of Flagey. World première on Monday 12 May at 3pm.

Finale : Kris Defoort
Music for the Heart will be performed by the twelve finalists from 26 to 31 May at the Brussels Centre for Fine Arts. They will be accompanied by Brussels Philharmonic under the baton of Kazushi Ono.

The commission of the compulsory work in the final was made possible thanks to the generous support of Mr. Rudolf Schülgen and Sabam, which supports creation.

Both works will be released on CD and on the main streaming platforms.
